“In the aftermath of the carnage of World War I, a number of avant-garde thinkers and artists realized that the modern experiment had taken a serious wrong turn. The arrogant belief system of scientific progress and materialism seemed to be a cover for something deeply irrational and dangerous – what Carl Jung called the “shadow”, representing the suppressed and repressed contents of the psyche. Poets and philosophers realized that the modern alienation from nature and the cosmos had reached such a state that it literally threatened to tear the world to shreds. Despite its faith in science and progress, modern humanity, as philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche realized in the nineteenth century, continued to live mythologically, influenced by unknown cosmic powers, shaken by periodic paroxysms whose origins were outside the circumscribed scope of the scientific worldview.
“When quantum physicists peeled away layer after layer of the material universe, they found that matter was made up mostly of empty space and energetic frequency, and that far from an objective reality that was actually “out there”, the nature of reality was participatory and subjective. The model of an empirical science capable of separating object from subject, matter from consciousness, turned out to be, in itself, a myth that the modern world had created. Time and space were not linear and straight but relative and curved. As the myth of objectivity collapsed, the modern world faced an abyss of relativism, which various ideologies, ranging from fascism to fundamentalism, made desperate attempts to overcome through brute force of propaganda.

Indigenous people preserved a process of separation and vision quest, in which the direct experience of altered states of consciousness brought the adolescent out of egocentrism. Through a direct encounter with the Anima mundi, the soul of the world, the initiatory ordeal compelled an acceptance of sacred time and adult responsibility. Initiation dignified the individual by giving him status as a self-reliant member of the tribe and a keeper of its secrets. It soon became apparent that the only world culture that had marginalized and rejected such initiatory practices was the modern West. The consequences of this rejection, and consequent soul loss, remain severe.”

Out 2 is a collective film installation and related explorative events, inspired by Jacques Rivette’s enigmatic 13-hour film Out 1: Noli Me Tangere (1971). Out 2 investigates “accessibility” to contemporaneity via historical moments. It intertwines documentary and fabricated fragments, also produced in the event, into a sculptural moving image composition.

Following the discourse on a crisis of masculinity and a lack of male role models, let’s compare the two men that hit the news headlines worldwide this week, Donald Trump and Leonard Cohen. I take special interest in their attitude towards women.
“Grab them by the pussy. You can do anything.” (source)
— Donald Trump, businessman and reality tv star, elected as the next president of the USA.
“I wish the women would hurry up and take over […] Then we can finally recognize that women really are the minds and the force that holds everything together” (source)
— Leonard Cohen, singer, songwriter and poet, who passed away at 82.
Yes, it’s quite selective and black-and-white, but still very revealing concerning these public images are present in media and as such are influential characters.
Cohen always appeared as the perfect gentleman, respectful and respected, while Trump acts like a schoolyard bully who never grew up. In this context, the circumstance of events —one passed away, the other soon a president— is most unfortunate.
On a positive note, Leonard Cohen’s work and persona will not be forgotten. And there’s hope (isn’t there always hope?) that Trump will reveal a more respectful side of himself once he’s finally “on top of the world”, if that would finally give him enough self-respect…?
Time to begin revealing things I’ve been preparing some time. PARAFERAL is my studio and a new creative outlet for visual, sonic and other productions. A great deal of the work remains under the surface, but some things will soon begin to pop up for public consumption.
